x=father's age at present
y= son's age at present
two times the father's age is '8 more than 6 times his son's age' would be represented by this equation:
2x=8+6y
'Ten years ago, the sum of their ages was 44':
(x-10)+(y-10)= 44
x+y-20=44
x+y=44+20
x+y=64
yung age ng son ang tinatanong so, we need to find the value of x in order to get the value of y (son's age)
if,
2x=8+6y
then,
x=4+3y
since x+y=64 and x=4+3y:
x+y=64
(4+3y)+y=64
4y+4=64
4y=64-4
4y=60
y=60/4
y=15
so the son's age is 15

let the ten's digit be 'x'
and the unit's digit be 'y'
the number would be (10x+y)
'the unit's digit is 3 greater than the ten's digit'
y=x+3
'the number is 4 times as large as the sum of its digits'
10x+y=4(x+y)
if,
y=x+3 and 10x+y=4(x+y)
then,
10x+x+3=4(x+x+3)
11x+3=4(2x+3)
11x+3=8x+12
11x-8x=12-3
3x=9
x=3
y=x+3
y=3+3
y=6
no.=xy
x=3
y=6
no.=36
so the correct ans would be 36 right?

>> Guest: bez, it's jacky. let x be the rate of Oscar. y be the rate of james.
if they are to meet after 32 seconds of running in opposite direction, that mins that the sum of the distances they've covered is equal to the circumference of the track. try to imagine it..
so, the working equation would be 32x + 32y =440.
rate=distance/time.
thus, the r of Oscar is 440/60. that is 22/3.
so, we now have,
32(22/3) + 32y = 440
we multiply the equation ol thruout by 3 for simplification.
so, we now have,
704+96y=1320
y=6.4166.. seconds
that is the r of James. but wat is asked hir is the time it will take james to go around the track.
so,the formula is t=d/r
ryt?
t=440/6.4166..
that's around 68. 57 seconds..
got it? :)

x=3y
"Four years ago, he was four times as old as his son was at that time."
x-4 = age of father four years ago

x = amount of time needed by Peter to finish a job
y = amount of time needed by Paul to finish a job
3 = amount of time needed by Peter and Paul working together to finish a job.
this means that in an hour,
1/x = amount of work finished by Peter

1/y = amount of work finished by Paul
and in an hour,

(1/x)+(1/y)
"they worked together for 1 hour then Paul left and Peter finishes the rest of the work in 8 more hours."

by substitution method
(eq.1 to eq.2)
3y = 3 + 2(11-y)
3y = 3 + 22 - 2y
3y+2y = 25
5y = 25
5y/5 = 25/5
y = 5
substitute the y value to eq.1
x = 11 - y
x = 11 - 5
x = 6
since, y=5 and x=6 then the numbers must be the reciprocal of the value solved...
therefore: the numbers are 1/6 & 1/5

>> dhax12: Min hand over takes hr hand after the 15min mark w/c is after 3o'clock
let x be the total time from 3o'clock to point the min hand over takes hr hand.
in eqn form:
x=(x/12)+15
x/12 is the length of time the min hand over takes hr hand.
solve for x
x-(x/12)=15
(12x-x)/12=15
11x/12=15
x=(15)(12)/11
x=180/11=16 4/11
this proves 14/12 is wrong.

Let r be the rate of copier,

given no. of copies=13 and time=10sec
then, r=13/10=1.3 copies per second
now naa kta rate=1.3 copies/second, hanap ta no. of copies in 1hr.
1hr=3600sec.
no. of copies=rate x time
time=1 hr=3600 sec.
no. of copies=1.3 x 3600
no. of copies=4680 copies

>> dhax12: Mr. Rice can finish the wash in 15 min, his son paul takes twice as long doing the same wash that is 15 x 2 = 30min.
one hint here is take the rate of each in one job and add their individual rate.
Let x be the time to finish the wash.
For mr. Rice his rate is 1/15, 1 indicates that that he can do 15 min to finish a "single" wash w/c is 1.
For paul it is 1/30,
the equation shall be,
(1/15)x+(1/30)x=1
why equals to 1?
It is said that they can finish washing (single job) if they work together.
Solve for x,
that will give you,
